Dive computers used to measure one thing: the dive. Depth, time, your no-decompression limit, maybe water temperature. The newest generation measures something else too — you. Heart rate, heart-rate variability, skin temperature, workload, recovery. Your wrist is now tracking your physiology as closely as it's tracking your ascent rate.

That's genuinely interesting, and some of it is genuinely useful. Some of it is also marketing dressed up as physiology. Here's an honest look at what biometric dive computers actually do, what that data means for your diving, and where the hype outruns the science.

What "biometric" actually means here

The headline feature on most of these units is a wrist-based heart-rate monitor that works underwater. Worn snug against the skin, computers like the Garmin Descent series will measure and display your actual heartbeat throughout the dive, and log it alongside depth and time. Pair a chest strap and the heart-rate data gets more reliable still. Add in the temperature sensor, the pulse oximeter, and the suite of on-land wellness tracking — sleep, HRV status, stress, recovery — and you've got a device building a fairly complete picture of your body before, during and after a dive.

So the data is real, and there's a lot of it. The interesting question is what it does for you.

What it's genuinely good for

Seeing your own exertion, honestly

Here's the most useful thing biometric tracking does today: it shows you how hard you were actually working. Divers routinely underestimate their exertion — you fin a little harder against a current, your heart rate climbs, you breathe more, you build up more inert gas and more CO2, and you might not consciously notice any of it until your gas is disappearing faster than expected. A heart-rate trace across the dive makes that visible. Over time you learn what a calm dive looks like for you versus a working one, and that self-knowledge is worth real money in gas consumption and comfort.

Recovery and readiness between dives

The on-land side — sleep quality, HRV trends, recovery metrics — genuinely helps with the part of diving that happens on the boat and the night before. Diving tired, dehydrated or under-recovered is a real factor in how your body handles a day of repetitive dives. A device that nudges you toward better rest and hydration is doing something quietly valuable, even if it's doing it above the surface.

Freediving and high-workload diving

For freedivers, real-time heart rate is legitimately useful for understanding your dive response and your limits. And for any diver doing physically demanding work underwater, seeing exertion climb in real time can be a prompt to slow down, which is almost always the right call.

Where the hype gets ahead of the science

Now the honest part. The dream being sold — sometimes explicitly, sometimes just implied — is a dive computer that reads your live physiology and adjusts your decompression obligation to your body on that specific day. A truly personalised, biometrically-driven deco algorithm.

We're not there. The decompression models running in these computers — Bühlmann ZHL-16C with gradient factors, in the case of the Garmin units and many others — are the same well-established, physics-and-physiology-based algorithms the rest of the industry uses. They calculate your obligation from depth and time, not from your live heart rate. The biometric sensors log your body's data alongside the dive; they don't currently feed it into the deco math in any meaningful, validated way.

That distinction matters, because a diver could reasonably buy one of these thinking their computer is now watching their heart and keeping them safe accordingly. It isn't. It's recording rich data you can learn from, which is valuable — but the decompression safety still comes from the same conservative algorithm and the same sensible diving habits it always did. Treat the biometrics as insight, not as a safety system that's watching your back in real time.

So should you buy one?

If you'd find the data genuinely interesting and useful — if you're the kind of diver who wants to understand your exertion, tighten up your gas consumption, and pay attention to recovery — then yes, a biometric computer is a rewarding tool, and the watch-style ones double as a capable everyday fitness device out of the water, which softens the price. Divers chasing better air consumption in particular tend to love the feedback loop.

If you just want a reliable, clearly-readable computer that tracks your dive and your no-deco limit accurately, you don't need the biometrics to be safe or happy, and a simpler unit will serve you brilliantly for less. There's no wrong answer here — only what's worth it to you.

One practical note whichever way you lean: the value of all that on-land wellness data depends on you actually wearing the thing as a daily watch, not just clipping it on before a dive. The recovery and HRV insight only exists if it's collecting data around the clock.
