The Pursuit of Mastery: Why We Added GUE Training to Our Lineup

If you’ve been hanging around the shop or chatting with our instructors recently, you might have heard a new acronym being tossed around: GUE.

We are incredibly excited to announce that Paragon Dive Store is now officially offering Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) certification courses, right alongside our trusted SDI, SSI, TDI, and NAUI programs.

But if you are already certified, or if you are looking to get your very first Open Water ticket, you are probably wondering: What exactly is GUE, and how is it different from the other training agencies?

It’s a great question. We added GUE to our catalog because they do things differently than anyone else in the scuba industry. If you are the kind of person who obsesses over the details, wants absolute mastery of your buoyancy, or has dreams of one day exploring deep wrecks or caves, here is why GUE might be exactly what you are looking for.

The Standard Approach vs. The GUE Approach

To understand GUE, you have to understand how most divers are traditionally taught.

Agencies like SDI and SSI are fantastic at what they do. They offer flexible, streamlined training designed to take a non-diver and safely turn them into a certified recreational diver. In a traditional class, the focus is on getting you comfortable underwater. When you learn a new skill—like clearing a flooded mask or recovering a dropped regulator—you usually kneel in the sand at the bottom of the pool to practice it. Once you check that skill off the list, you move on.

GUE looks at scuba training through a completely different lens.

GUE was founded by some of the world's elite cave and exploration divers. They realized that kneeling on the bottom to practice a skill creates a "training scar." In the real ocean, if you lose your mask over a fragile coral reef or a bottomless wall, you can't just drop to your knees to fix it.

Therefore, in a GUE course, there is no kneeling. From day one, minute one, every single skill is taught and practiced while you are neutrally buoyant, hovering horizontally in the water column.

"Begin With the End in Mind"

This is the core philosophy of GUE.

In traditional training, a diver often has to unlearn bad habits as they progress. You might dive a jacket BCD for years, only to realize you need to completely relearn your buoyancy when you switch to a backplate and wing for technical diving.

GUE eliminates this by starting you at the finish line. Whether you are taking your very first breaths in GUE Recreational Diver 1, or you are training for a 300-foot cave push, the foundation is exactly the same:

• Perfect Trim and Buoyancy: You are taught to dive completely flat and horizontal to minimize drag and protect the environment.
• Efficient Propulsion: You learn advanced kicks (like the frog kick and the backward kick) immediately, rather than waiting for a tech course.
• Standardized Gear: Every GUE diver dives the same equipment configuration (a backplate and wing with a long-hose regulator setup).
• The Team Mindset: You aren't just taught to look after yourself; you are taught to operate as a cohesive, highly aware team.

Because the foundation never changes, transitioning from a recreational diver to a technical or cave diver is completely seamless. You never have to relearn how to dive.

Where Should You Start? (The Course Lineup)

You don't have to be a hardcore tech diver to take a GUE class. In fact, their curriculum is built to accommodate everyone from total beginners to seasoned veterans. Here is a look at the key courses we are now offering:

1. For the Total Beginner: GUE Recreational Diver 1

If you have never taken a breath underwater, this is the ultimate starting point. It is a more rigorous and longer course than a standard Open Water class (usually running 5 to 6 days), but it produces uniquely competent divers. You will graduate with a level of buoyancy control, comfort, and confidence that usually takes traditional divers years to achieve.

2. For the Certified Diver: GUE Fundamentals ("Fundies")

This is by far the most popular GUE course in the world. If you are already certified through SDI, SSI, or PADI, Fundamentals is your gateway into the GUE system.

For many divers, "Fundies" is a massive "Aha!" moment. It is designed to strip away your bad habits, dial in your trim, perfect your kicking techniques, and introduce you to the standardized gear configuration. Even if you have zero desire to become a tech diver, Fundamentals will make you an exponentially safer, more efficient, and more relaxed recreational diver.

3. The Primers and Tech Path

Once you have your foundation, the GUE system opens up. We offer specialized "Primers" to quickly get you up to speed on specific skills, including the Doubles Primer, Drysuit Primer, and DPV 1 (Scooter) Primer.

For those ready to go deep, we also offer GUE Technical Diver 1, which introduces decompression diving and helium-based breathing mixtures (Trimix) to keep your head clear at depth.

We still proudly teach SDI and SSI because they are brilliant, accessible ways to learn to dive and enjoy the ocean. But GUE isn't about just "getting certified." It is about the pursuit of absolute mastery.

It requires a bit more time, a bit more discipline, and a willingness to be challenged. But the reward is diving with a level of effortless grace and safety that completely transforms how you experience the underwater world.
